From the first time you breathe through a regulator to the moment you spot your first reef shark, scuba diving is one of those hobbies that stays with you for life. Singapore might be a small island nation, but its dive schools are impressively well-equipped to train beginners and seasoned explorers alike. A good diving course in Singapore doesn’t just teach theory and skills; more importantly, it builds confidence, safety awareness, and a lifelong appreciation for marine ecosystems.
If you’re thinking of getting certified or levelling up your dive skills, here are some reputable dive centres worth checking out.

Great learning experience with Coral for our OW! The program was well designed and Coral was super patient and helped me overcome my fear for open water step by step (I always thought I would have some panicking moments in the first few dives, but I think the pool training and detailed theory session helped me build up the mechanism to calm myself down underwater). She encouraged us to ask questions, talked about how we felt to ensure peace of mind underwater. These are signs of great instructors for sure!

Me & Daughter was with Instructor Tina & Coral for our Nitrox Course and Daughter for her Open Water at Puri Madha 4D/3N. Thank you Instructor Tina for patient and taking good care of my Daughter. And thanks Instructor Coral & Dive Guide Ijat for the filming our dive, leave us good memories when we were in Bali Tulamben @ liberty wreck. Look forward to our next dive.

Had the Open Water training over 2 days with Alex (Padi Instructor) and he was brilliant. First day morning at raffles marina, then the rest of the weekend in the sea. The boat crew and other instructors were great too – always helpful and answering any questions throughout the weekend. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get started with diving – especially with Alex. Thanks again to turtle buddy divers!

Amazing Open Water learning experience with TBD and I highly recommend them. Thanks to Leo, Nina and Raihan. My expectation was very low knowing that Singapore’s visibility was low but Leo still managed to make it fun with his extensive knowledge of the water and where to find marine life in these waters. The team was also extremely accommodating to my busy schedule on short notice and managed put my sessions all on one set of weekdays. I am extremely grateful that I finally get to complete this because of TBD and shall be back to complete my advanced with them soon!
Peirong Chun
My daughter just completed PADI Basic Mermaid course with TBD and it was an enjoyable and memorable experience! *A BIG thank you* Melodie was friendly and patient in explaining the theory, demonstrating the safety precautions and guiding my gal on the techniques of mermaiding in the pool. Her strokes are more graceful after the session ❤️. Nina was there to facilitate the course and even prepared nice backdrop for photos ?. My gal had a great time with them ? Highly recommended!

Signed up for OW via buddy promo but due to work commitment I had to postpone. They are nice in accommodating my request on the change of dates. We had the pleasure of having Eugene as our instructor. He was very competent and ensure we are confident in our drills. During our first open sea dive he & Izz (also from DiveLab) constantly look out for us and made us felt safe. Overall the experience surpass my expectations and they definitely made the trip much more awesome & memorable!
Kit Chun Loke
Shoutout to our dive instructors Henry and Chin for an amazing dive experience. We had a mix of OWD and fun divers, and they ensured both groups are well taken care of. Outside of the dives, they also arranged dinners and gatherings for the divers to bond and share their experiences! Pre-dive communications / admin could have been better but the main experience was the dives itself.

Completed my Basic divinng certification (also known as Open Water, OW). with Divelab. Good experience, friendly community. The entire trip was smooth and hassle free. Looking forward to the next trip already! Instructor Henry was very clear and assuring, which made the dives (albeit educational) really fun, enjoyable and stressfree.

It was indeed an exciting experience diving for the first time and getting my SSI certificate for Open Waters. Appreciate Serene and Shawn’s guidance at Pulau Hantu West. Despite the poor visibility of 1m and choppy water on the surface was glad to see some sea life including a baby octopus, mermaid’s purse, flatworm, noble volute sea snail, butterfly fish on these dives.

I have started my diving journey with Cuddlefish in May 2023, starting from Open Water and all the way to dive master (graduated in Nov 2024). It was a fantastic, enriching experience and diving with Serene and her merry pirates was definitely one of the highlights of living in Singapore. Missing you guys! Greetings from Denmark.

Spent the weekend in Tioman with Blue Reef Scuba for my Rescue Diver Course. The instructors and divemasters made the content easy to understand, and the dives enjoyable. The skills were also easier to execute because of the way it was taught by our instructor Zai. Though tiring, I have to say that this is probably the most fulfilling course since Open Water, and I’m already looking forward to the next trip! Minus the skills and scenarios, kinda didn’t want the trip to end. Shoutout to our instructors and dms Zai, Diana, Jorene, Henri, Shaun and Jun Hao. You guys made this trip so much more enjoyable! Thank you for looking out for us and imparting your knowledge.

Did the open water certification with Blue Reef Scuba. Had the best instructor(Chee Preng) and dive master(Yalun) who ensured a fun and safe dive. Pool day, our instructor was encouraging and prepared us a lot for the actual dive. Couldn’t have made it without their patience and help. Thanks for the great experience.

Not forgetting our Dive Master Yalun who constantly looked out for us (and towing me when I’m tired on surface haha) thank you for always making sure we are safe. Also to all the instructors Cheepeng, mind, shan, thank you for always making sure i was safe and helping me in and out the boat. Feeling like a dive princess with all my equipments checked and in good diving condition. sorry I really cant remember everyone’s name ? we really had a good time and thank you for the memories ❤️

BestLah’s Recommendation
Each dive centre brings something different to the table, so choosing one depends on what matters most to you. Here are a few tailored recommendations to help you decide.
1. If you’re nervous about open water and want strong fundamentals
Our pick: Orpheus Dive
If the thought of descending into open water makes your heart race a little, Orpheus Dive is an excellent place to start. Their teaching philosophy goes beyond simply completing PADI skills. Instructors spend time helping students understand why each technique matters, especially when it comes to buoyancy control, breathing patterns, trim, and propulsion. That extra attention makes a huge difference when visibility drops or when you’re managing multiple tasks underwater.
Because their team includes highly experienced instructors with extensive dive logs and advanced training, you’re learning from divers who’ve handled a wide range of real-world conditions. They also offer performance-focused workshops and even GUE-based training for those who want to refine their technique further. If you see diving as a long-term hobby and want to build calm, technical confidence from day one, Orpheus gives you that solid foundation.
2. If you have a busy schedule and prefer small, hands-on classes
Our pick: Turtle Buddy Divers
If your calendar is packed with work or family commitments, flexibility becomes important. Turtle Buddy Divers stands out for accommodating scheduling and small class sizes, which means you’re not squeezed into large batches where personal attention is limited.
Training often takes place in Singapore’s local waters, which might not have perfect visibility, but that’s actually a plus. You’ll learn to stay calm and manage skills in realistic conditions, building genuine confidence instead of relying on ideal tropical settings.
They’re also trained in the Green Fins environmental philosophy, so you’ll learn eco-conscious diving habits early on. If you value personalised instruction, practical local experience, and environmental awareness, Turtle Buddy Divers offers a balanced and supportive environment.
3. If you want practical skills, gear exposure, and real-world confidence
Our pick: DiveLab
DiveLab is particularly suitable if you’re detail-oriented and curious about equipment and dive tech. Founded by an SSI Instructor Certifier with deep technical and servicing experience, the centre blends certification training with hands-on gear knowledge.
One standout feature is that students train using Shearwater Peregrine dive computers, a premium device that many divers upgrade to later in their journey. Getting comfortable with high-quality gear early on gives you a stronger understanding of dive planning and monitoring.
Their Advanced Adventurer programme in Tioman is also useful if you’re unsure which specialties interest you. It allows you to sample different areas before committing fully. If you like learning in a structured, practical way and want confidence that extends beyond just passing your certification, DiveLab is a strong fit.
Final Thoughts
Learning to scuba dive serves as a gateway to exploring coral reefs, marine wildlife, and hidden underwater landscapes around the world. The dive centres listed above each bring something unique to the table, from personalised instruction and eco-friendly philosophies to technical training and organised dive trips. No matter your comfort level in the water, choosing a reputable school with experienced instructors will help you build safe habits, strong skills, and a deeper appreciation for the ocean.
Once you’ve earned your certification, the adventure doesn’t have to stop at scuba diving. Singapore and its neighbouring islands offer plenty of ways to enjoy the sea at a slower pace too. If you’re keen to soak in scenic coastlines and mangrove views, check out our guide to the best places for kayaking in Singapore, you might just discover a new favourite way to explore the water.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
2. Where do the actual "open water" dives take place?
Most local courses conduct their final dives at Pulau Hantu or occasionally Sisters' Islands. If you have a bit more time and a larger budget, many local centres also organise weekend trips to Pulau Tioman or Batam for the final checkout dives, where the water is significantly clearer.
3. How long does it take to get certified as an Open Water Diver?
The standard duration is usually three to four days. This is typically split into three parts: online theory (eLearning) which you do at home, one full day of pool skills (confined water), and two days of open water dives. Many Singaporeans opt for a "weekend warrior" schedule to avoid taking leave from work.
4. Is it safe to dive in Singapore given the low visibility?
Absolutely. While the visibility at Pulau Hantu usually averages between 2 to 4 metres, the training is conducted with very strict instructor-to-student ratios. Learning in low visibility actually makes you a more observant and composed diver, as you have to stay close to your buddy and hone your navigation skills from day one.
5. What is the minimum age for a child to start diving?
The general minimum age for a Junior Open Water course is 10 years old. It is a fantastic way to get the kids off their screens and into nature, though do keep in mind that children under 15 will have certain depth restrictions on their licence until they grow older.
6. Do I need to buy all my own gear before the course starts?
Save your money for now! Almost every entry-level course in Singapore includes the rental of all basic equipment, including the BCD, regulator, wetsuit, and weights. Most people only choose to buy their own mask and snorkel first for hygiene and a better fit, but even that is usually optional.
7. How much does a basic Open Water course typically cost in 2026?
Prices generally range between $650 and $950 SGD. The variation usually depends on whether your open water dives are done locally at Pulau Hantu via a day boat or if they include a weekend trip to a nearby Malaysian island. Always check if the price includes the certification processing fees and equipment rental to avoid hidden "top-ups".
8. Can I dive if I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes, you certainly can. Many divers wear contact lenses underwater without any issues. If you prefer not to, you can easily find or rent prescription masks (optical masks) that function just like your spectacles, allowing you to see the tiny nudibranchs and seahorses clearly.
9. What happens if I have a medical condition like asthma?
You will be required to fill out a medical declaration form before you start. If you tick "yes" to certain conditions like asthma, heart issues, or chronic sinus problems, you will need a quick sign-off from a doctor to ensure you are fit to dive. It is a standard safety precaution to ensure your lungs and heart can handle the pressure changes.
10. Can I fly home or travel to Malaysia immediately after my last dive?
You should definitely wait. The standard safety rule is to wait at least 18 to 24 hours after your last dive before flying or going to high altitudes (like driving up a mountain). This is to allow any residual nitrogen in your body to off-gas safely. So, if you finish your dives on Sunday afternoon, don't book a flight out until Monday evening!
