I googled Kelvin’s work when I was sent a brochure for his workshop. I immediately thought – I love his style and that’s the standard that I aspire my own work to be one day! Fast forward a few months and I find myself in his studio, camera in hand, a gorgeous model waiting, the single light source fired up. I am struggling to think about how to start. I fire off a few tentative shots, hoping to warm up. The results are ok only. Kelvin observes me from the shadows. He walks across the room and softly makes a few points. Suddenly something clicks on me and I adjust the light and adjust my approach. That day, I probably had the best fun shooting someone and produced some of my favourite portraits I have taken. Not because the pictures are technically perfect (many of the ones I like are not), but because I learnt something invaluable about myself, my photography style and about capturing a mood in an image. Kevin does not instruct in a formal sense, nor does he overwhelm. He stands back and lets you do your thing; he observes, and then he comes in and makes a few points that make you feel comfortable and say just enough to help you move toward in the direction that you want. You end up learning something about yourself and your photography. To me, that is the most valuable lesson and the nest way to get better at what we love to do.

I cannot say enough about Kelvin, his work, his dedication and his wonderful wife, Elaine! They were so amazing to work with and the pictures (which were a late valentines day surprise for my husband) turned out better than I could have ever hoped. They worked around my schedule and were so quick with the results. Ultimate professionalism and we will be returning later in the year for another photoshoot.

I am beyond thrilled to share my experience with the very talented Kelvin who recently painted our family portraits. The combination of expert skill and natural talent produced a portrait so lifelike it truly felt as if we were looking into a mirror. Kelvin not only demonstrated an impeccable commitment to accurately capturing our likeness but also a keen eye for details that contribute to realism. Every line, texture, shade and hue seemed to be infused with careful thought and precision, recreating our features with astonishing accuracy. What impressed me was Kelvin’s ability to transport the vivacity of real-life onto canvas. In a digital era, Kelvin’s skill and dedication produced a deeply personal, lifelike portrait that we will treasure forever. I highly recommend Kelvin for his remarkable talent and power to turn tradition and technique into something truly unique and evocatively striking.

I’ve been doing the course at the institute now for 9months, nearing the end. It has been a fantastic experience so far. The modules have a good combination of technical and practical details that allow you to freely choose your style, but also ensure that you have the knowledge to recalibrate. The narrative by George Seper, is funny, straightforward and practical, making it engaging to learn. For a novice such as myself, it has been a great learning experience so far. I want to also give a shout out to my tutor and mentor Gary Wallis, who has provided me we really good insights and feedback on my coursework.

I’ve always been suspicious of online courses – how can you learn a practical subject when you’re not in the classroom with your teacher? But this course has revolutionised my thinking. The course materials are packed with technical details brought to life by George’s real-life examples. The assignments are proper tests. The Facebook group of your fellow students and past graduates is always there to offer support, empathy and feedback. But the icing on the cake? Your very own tutor, a professional photographer, to answer your questions, mark your assignments and guide you along the way. What a resource!

I signed up for private lesson on Essential Foundation Photography to have a better knowledge of photography and I can honestly say it was an exceptional experience and beyond my expectation. The course was well structured and covered the comprehensive range of essential topics that I need to understand in photography. Alan is not only passionate in his teaching. He is also very patient and used practical examples and real world scenarios to illustrate key principles. Overall, this photography course with Alan was an invaluable investment in my photography journey to the next level.
Tyler Sherwood
I took my first intro to photography with Alan and have since extended that to 1:1 sessions with him, tailored to my needs. The intro course was engaging, thorough, and hit all of the basics and more. With both in-class sessions and excursions around Singapore, you’re sure to learn how to use your camera properly. With his 1:1 sessions, you get exactly what you need to further your learning in a personalised experience. I cannot recommend Alan highly enough. Not only is Alan a great photographer, he’s a great teacher.
Jannah Ismail
I had 1-1 photography with Instructor Alan in September 2024 and it was a mix of theory and hands on – off site. It is honestly really good and I learnt A LOT. He helped me understand my camera settings too as tbh, I have never been a photographer. So I never really explored the functions of my camera except ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. Only had to learn due to nature of my job in social media and comms. So this was real proper training from an expert like Alan. I understood more about photography concepts, lighting and processing what shots I need to take faster and also real life situations. When I came back to apply it for my work, my colleagues told me the quality of my photos have improved so much and this makes me happy. I would recommend this course to anyone be it beginner or even advanced as the course structure that Alan curated has a variety of elements and will definitely test your photography knowledge. Alan is also a very humble person and will give good constructive feedback for improvement. Aside to that, the admin side of SOP is very helpful too when it comes to enquiries and response. Thank you Alan and SOP!

I really enjoyed this course—perfectly paced over three Sundays, it offered a great balance of theory and hands-on practice. Jason Wong was a knowledgeable and engaging trainer who explained complex editing techniques in a clear, beginner-friendly way. His real-world tips on shooting with mobile devices were especially useful. I’m walking away feeling much more confident about creating quality video content. A bit more time for practice during the sessions would have made it a 6 star experience!

I joined PSS Singapore Photography For Good, a 7-part masterclass workshop with award-winning photographer Derrick Ong from Derrick Ong Photography, initiative in partnership with SPD Singapore. And it was one of the best photography class I had ever attended thus far. The course was well structured and coordinated by Michele from PSS, Derrick the instructor and Gordon from SPD. Derrick’s theory lessons gives great insights on the thinking process of 5Ws and 1H (who, what, where, when, why and how) that helps me to make a good photo and tell a good story. He also gave guidance during practical session. What I love most was the critique session because that teaches me what to look out for in future and what to avoid. I also have the rare opportunity to walk into the lives of 2 of the 8 profiles who had benefitted from SPD Singapore, documenting their daily life both at their home and at the SPD Centre through photography. This course definitely made a difference in my photography journey!! I am really glad that I had made the decision to sign up.
