Personal Mobility Aids or PMAs are devices that are designed to carry a person who is unable to walk or has difficulty walking. PMAs include mobility scooters, motorized wheelchairs, and wheelchairs. Mobility scooters, in particular, are designed for the handicapped and elderly. This is why they are not to be confused with electric scooters or e-scooters, which are 2-wheeled scooters that can go as fast as 25 km/h.
In Singapore, there is the Active Mobility Act (AMA), which was approved in May 2018. It provides a set of rules and code of conduct with regards to sharing of public paths among different users. This rule applies to users of bicycles, power-assisted bicycles (PAB), motorized or non-motorized Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs), and Personal Mobility Aids. One of the guidelines that users must follow is where they can use their PMAs. Here in Singapore, PMAs are allowed on footpaths and cycling paths, but not on the road.
