Traditional and unassuming bakery in Alexandra Village that probably gets busier in the weeks leading to Mid-Autumn Festival when they roll out their moon cakes. Located opposite the Hawker Centre. Shopfront is unpretentiously old school. Quick and efficient service. The moon cakes are really traditional in terms of looks and tastes. For those who are so used to mass production factory made moon cakes with precision tuned texture and flavour, they may not enjoy such traditionally made moon cakes as much as those who grew up in that era.

Ever since I could remember, my family were invested only in the baked mooncakes produced by Tai Chong Kok (Hue Kee). Of course, we did sample the handiwork of many other cake houses and hotels but they rarely met the standards that TCK(HK) set and maintained throughout the decades. When they did, we would have to fork out up to double the price. What standards? The traditional mooncakes are crowned in well-baked pastry – glossy, thin, textured and pliable bread crust. Inside, the filling is ground just smooth enough, bearing a hint of a grainy feel to remind you that this was made from scratch. Chewing it brings out the full, natural aromas of lotus seeds or beans enhanced with a judicious hint of rose essence. Before the pandemic struck, they diversified with snow skin varieties that boasted flavours like rum and raisin, and lychee martini. In either case, the balance of flavours and textures is always thoughtful. My favourite is their baked ham-and-nut mooncake; while a tad drier this year, it upholds the hallmarks with little bursts of shredded lime leaf, olive kernel, savoury ham, piquant mandarin peel, nutty toasted almond and sesame seeds, all bound in a carefully sweetened malt-jam. I was a little disappointed, therefore, not to see the queue that I have grow accustomed to. Where have the crowds gone? Has the split in the family business drawn their customers away? Or perhaps local palates are changing? I do hope this outlet continues to find meaning in their craft and their friendly service. Losing them for the lack of demand would be a crying shame.

For authentic traditional moon cakes, my first choice is Tai Chong Kok (Hue Kee) moon cakes. Very authentic and traditional. Simple traditional packaging, not fanciful. Purely traditional presentation. What are the characteristics of traditional moon cakes? Share it here: the crust has a traditional cake fragrance. The lotus seed paste is pure hence will not stick to the teeth. The bake is just right, and egg yolk is a little oily. Many famous brand mooncake can’t meet these criteria. Therefore, for moon cakes, my only choice is 大中国饼家.

In the LUSCIOUS! Traditional Classic Series, it has 4 Traditional Pure White Lotus Mooncake with Melon Seeds. It is made with a low sugar recipe, the skin is like my favourite childhood snack – piglet biscuit 公仔饼, its thick and fragrant. The white lotus is smooth & mild sweet with crunch of melon seeds. 𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗠𝗢𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗜’𝗩𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥! Usually this kind of low sugar tradition mooncake, it’s either still very sweet or not fragrant, they have it just on the point! I ate the whole piece and I don’t even feel cloying, it’s just so good.
